WTC at The Canyons – 2/27

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Woohooo! This might be the only day I get to make it to the WTC this year, It’s gonna be nice to ride with some of the crew for a change…

pc070015I met Dave in the parking lot and proceeded to mount up a B-Squared.  I didn’t bother to bump my angles down, switching from my speedster, and I thought I measured my stance-width correctly (but found out later that I hadn’t.) Once we got things together, we headed up the mountain. There had been a skiff of snow overnight, but quite a bit of the mountain had been groomed. We decided to make our way to the “old” side of the resort to ride the Super Condor lift. After a wrong turn by Dave on the way there we finally made it and hit Apex Ridge. Apex Ridge is one of those “vanity” runs, underneath a lift. I followed Dave down, and it was hilarious watching the folks on the lift rubber-necking on the lift to watch him. As the name states, Apex Ridge is a “ridge” with the potential of dropping off of the sides if you make a mistake. Dave said he liked the run, but I think it may have given him flashbacks to his “Femur Ward” run, so we headed over to Boa for some turns, then headed back to the Sun Peak lift to meet up with Kirk, and some other friends of Dave’s.

We headed back to Super Condor with Kirk, and proceeded to make some ruts on Boa. By this time I’ve finally become somewhat accustomed to the B-Squared. As I mentioned earlier, I kinda screwed up when I first mounted my bindings, and the board did not feel great on the first few runs I took. I could feel the metal in it doing it’s job, but it just wasn’t doing it for me. Toeside turns felt OK, but heelsides for some reason didn’t. Dave told me I needed to be more aggressive (What a surprise for a whimp like me.) So, while we waited for Kirk, I switched my stance up a bit, bumping my angles down to 55 front / 50 rear, and widened the stance about 1/2 inch, moving the front binding forward. So at this point I was about 1/2 inch forward on the insert pack. Holy schmoly what a difference that little change made! Now the board really felt good. With the taper, I still had to work the back foot more than I’m used to, but what a fun ride. The metal ate up bumps and ruts like it’s designed to do, and the board became more fun with each run. Now that I think about it, it kind of reminded me of  a Madd, only a whole lot better. Maybe  Madd / Prior Metal hybrid – damp, but with more pop than any of the other metal boards I’ve ridden. The more you give / put into it, the more it gives back. It’s definitely got Billy in it’s blood – you’ve got to be on top of it. I’d say it’s not as easy to ride as some of the other metal boards out there, but it’s also got more pop in it. It’s definitely a “do-anything” board. I’m not a racer, but I’m pretty sure this board would do fine in a GS course, but it’s still short enough to throw around and ride pretty much anywhere. I even took it off-piste for a few yards now and then, and even with the hammer-head nose, it seems to float just fine. Hopefully at some point I’ll get some more time on it to really play… I think Dave has put them on sale, so now is the time to grab one if you can, they might never be this cheap again.

After a few more runs on Boa, Dave had to hit the road, and Skate showed up. We took a few runs with Skate on Super Condor, and Kirk and I swapped boards so he could try out the B-Squared. I wasn’t going to complain about riding Kirks Prior WCRM 187…

We decided to make our way over to the opposite side of the resort and check out things on the Dreamcatcher lift. Dreamcatcher is new as of last year, and even though The Canyons is my home resort, I haven’t had the time to make it all the way over. There was probably 3 times as much snow on the Dreamcatcher side of the resort, as compared to the other side, and the runs that had been groomed were pretty chopped up, but we still enjoyed the exploring. That Dreamcatcher lift would be a dream on a powder day. Tons of open trees to ride everywhere.  At that point we decided to make our way off of the hill. A run through the meat-gates on Doc’s Run ended our day. (No complaints, of course.)

I did take my crappy little point-and shoot camera with me, but I absolutely suck at shooting action shots with it. Sorry Kirk and Skate, the only half-way decent shot I got was of Flourescent Dave on Boa

WTC – Saturday at Solitude.

Friday, February 27th, 2009

OK, the official verdict is Saturday will be at Solitude.

Sounds like the meeting place is at the west end of the parking lot near the Eagle Express chair. If someone would like to post directions, great, otherwise, just wing-it…

Tailgating? What time does the party start?  :)

Sunday is still Park City…

Thursday @ Snowbasin

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Thursday at Sonwbasin was less than an optimal day of riding. Extremely lowlight and a previous day thaw and subsequent freeze overnight made conditions in the early morning very fast and a bit dangerous. I’d compare it to driving in the dense fog at 50 mph with about 20-30 feet of visibility. If you were to come up upon an obstacle, you would have about 23 milliseconds to react. The riding was the same. Anytime I tried to open it up on the first generation metal topsheet Prior Berube shape, I’d either end up airborne across a groom seam or in a bordering mogul field. The Vist plate attached to the Prior is a wonderful product that really does it’s job but no suspension system is going to help me negotiate moguls at speed on a GS shape. I’m not really familiar with SB so I explored around a bit and since I wasn’t riding really hard, I took some time to take in the scenery. After a few runs off of the Needles Gondola, I worked my way to the South towards the Strawberry Gondola. After several frustrating runs in low light but a great view of the Valley to the West and a great view of the weather coming across from the top of the Strawberry Gondola, I decided to time a run with some light. I waited around for about fifteen minutes for about a 5 minute clearing in the sky and it paid off. The snow atop was brilliant, the groom was on and traffic was minimal. A few laps down Elk Ridge with some light were just what I needed to reinforce what I already know about the Basin. It’s a great place to carve. The grooming is spectacular, pitch exists in a big way, there are around 1000 million runs and the staff are absolutely there to make your day even better.

WTC Schedule – Saturday at Solitude?

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Sorry for the “loosely” organized WTC this year. Again, as Dave mentioned, the “surprise” with Park City has caused mass confusion! ;-)

Anyway, Saturday, we’re thinking about riding Solitude.

Anyone out there who is planning on riding with us Saturday, please check in with us and let us know what your preferences are. You can leave a comment here, throw a post up on the thread over on BOL, email dave (at) hardbooter.com, or email skully (at) hardbooter.com and let us know. If Solitude is your vote, let us know where a good meeting place is.

Friday is at The Canyons. Again, we’ll meet in the lower parking lot near the Cabriolet lift, roughly between 8:00 and 9:00. Again, we have access to a limmited ammount of 1/2 price tickets, but we need to know if you are planning on using one of those vouchers.

There will be a few select boards in the truck for demo but you’ll have to provide binders and boots. Hardbooter custom shaped Priors and a couple of Virus’s for your enjoyment. We will not let you mount Cateks on HB demo boards so, over the course of the weekend, if you would like to demo a board from us, please provide a different interface or drop us a line and we might be able to arrange something. We’ll have some tools and saw horses for early setup and operate out of a 1963 split window Corvette trunk. Ok, maybe a 1998 Ford Explorer.

At this point, Park City is still the plan on Sunday.

P.S. I’ve got a Rossignol World Cup Race 190 for sale. If anyone is interested and wants to pick it up at the WTC for a good deal, let me know.

The Canyons 2-21-2009 and… A WTC Day at The Canyons?

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

No work today. Oh well… I took out the Speedster 177 for the first time.  Took runs on Snodancer (not really steep enough for the 177, but still fun), Another World, Cloud Nine, and Doc’s Run. The snow is great right now after last week’s storms. Looks like we’re due for another storm the first part of the week too. Conditions should be excelent for the WTC… Tried out some Titanflex Intec bindinngs for the firts part of the day with the new Fin-tecs, then mounted up the regular race titanium clips.  I’ve now had enough time on the Fin-tecs to have an opiniont: The Fin-tecs work great. Seems you have to be a little more precise to get them into the receivers. Hmmm. Fin made something that’s more “precise” than it’s predecessor? What a surprise. No more worrying about plastic heels exploding, that’s a good thing in my book.

canyonstrailmapDave has mentioned that we may want to try spending a day at The Canyons for the WTC. I’ll be working on Sunday the first of March, and could direct people to the best carving runs, and possibly do some riding with folks also, or we could possibly do a different day. If anyone out there is interested in trying to get together for a ride day at The Canyons, hit me up at: skully (at) hardbooter.com, or post a comment here – I’ll keep an eye on it. We’ll see what the interest is, and go from there, otherwise, we’ll probably spend most days at Park City.

Looking forward to next week…

Wasatch Trenchin’ Convention a no go…

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Well folks,
After much deliberation, we’ve decided to dramatically change the format of the Wasatch Trenchin’ Convention, at least for this season.  The decision was prompted when Park City Mountain Resort decided to unleash a blow to us that we couldn’t see coming for miles.  We’ve been informed that their new policy is against on snow demos, at least for an entity of our size.  In the past they have warmly welcomed our event and given us great support but over time, have tightened the noose on their commitment to home grown and local companies.

“Thanks for your continued interested in demo’ing your product at Park City Mountain Resort.  Unfortunately, we are not able to host the demo this year, as we have decided to move away from hosting on snow demo’s that aren’t part of a larger event footprint.”

A request for reconsideration prompted this response

“We have considered your request, but unfortunately as I mention below, we are not able to host the demo as we have moved away from hosting on snow demo’s at the resort.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Feel free to drop a line to drop Meisha Lawson a line at meishal@pcmr.com

Ride days with meet times will be decided in the next couple of days and announced accordingly on www.hardbooter.net/blog .  They will more than likely include Park City Mountain Resort only unless someone else takes the reins and pulls a meet together at another resort. The event has always been about riding together and showcasing our sport to the masses with larger numbers of us out on the hill making clean arcs and trenches a-plenty.  We believe that a tent with a bunch of gear is not necessary for the spirit of the WTC to live on.

We have a limited amount of demo boards that are available so contact Billy or me and we’ll get you set up the night before a ride or the morning of.  (billy@hardbooter.com dave@hardbooter.com)  If this inconveniences anyone in anyway, we apologize and will give it another go next season.

See you on the hill!!

SES / Park City President’s Day Weekend

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

WOW, I am not sure where to start this blog ha.  I got back from SES early Saturday morning and I am still trying to wrap my head around everything.  First I must send out a big thanks to my friend Andy who graciously let me sleep at his place for the entire week.  This was my first visit to SES since the PureCarve one 10 years ago.  My how some things have changed and how some things have remained the same.  The most important thing that stayed the same was the stoke everyone had just from being around so many like-minded riders.  It didn’t matter if you were Eurocarving, pointing it straight, or riding switch everyone was just having a blast.  I wish I could had more time to demo a few boards but I am the coach for the USA Deaf Snowboard Team.  We held the tryouts for the team that will represent us in the 2010 AlpenCup (world cup event for deaf athletes) that is being held at Aspen March 14-18th 2010.  If you are around please come out and support all the athletes.  So far 15 different countries have committed to participating.  Representing the USA will be Jeff Pollock of Layton Utah, Bill Loftus of Stratton Vermont, Greg Reger of Summit County Colorado, Brad Gibson of Austin Texas, and Nixo Lanning of Santé Fe New Mexico.  Congratulations to everyone who made the team and good luck next year!  This picture has the team plus Billy and Chris Prior.img00080
Nice to see so many alpine riders all in one area.  One thing that I thought was really cool was seeing everyone’s different styles.  Each person brought his or her unique flair to ripping down the hill.  You would have my team ripping race inspired freecarves right next to guys doing fully laid out Eurocarves then Billy rips it switch.  Just great to watch of that unfolding before your eyes.  Big props to Fin and Michelle for putting on this great event too!  Without them this wouldn’t be the yearly celebration that it has become.  Also having all the guys making the boards we ride there was great.  Being able to talk shop with Chris, Sean, Bruce, Frank, and Mats is a rare treat.  I could on and on about the riding and the camaraderie but I think enough is enough.
The last thing I want to mention about SES is not related to riding.  One night after dinner at the bomber house (big thanks to the McDougall’s) I was challenged to a foosball game.  I haven’t played foos in probably 10 or more years but I am not one to back down to a challenge.  So Paul and I teamed up against the challenger, Brad and his partner Billy.  Brad was trying to get me to make a wager but since I do not gamble Bill took him up on his bet.  Without going into detail lets just say the by the end of the night Bill’s wallet was a little bit fatter!  Paul was like a brick wall on defense.
After getting back from Aspen Flavia and I headed up to Park City on Sunday.  We met up with Jared and Tiffany and had a blast in all the new snow.  The whole week I was in Aspen they were calling for snow but we didn’t get much, I now know why, the snow gods left it all in Utah!  I think Park City must have gotten close to 3 feet in the week I was gone and last night got another 10 inches.  With all the new snow Park City is in the best shape I have seen it in all year but Saturday was windy as hell.  I had looked at the forecast before we headed out and it said 29 and sunny so I was shocked by how cold it was in the wind, defiantly not dressed for it haha.  After a few runs we headed to Mid Mountain to get some hot chocolate and warm up.  This was the first time all year I have been in Mid Mountain and the renovations look great.  I am looking forward to a warm spring day on that deck enjoying a cold beer and watching people fall down McConkey’s.  By the afternoon the weather was much better as there wasn’t as much wind.  All that wind left Silver Queen in very good east coast shape.  I am pretty sure that I was the only person that wanted to keep going back to it haha.  If I remember right Jared said something about ice but I don’t remember seeing blue so I think he was making something up or maybe just a little delusional.  Anyway, after that we rode Flavia’s favorite run Assessment.  We took a few runs down while Jared took some pictures.  I need Jared to send me some more pics as I only have a few to include.  dsc001481After wrapping up a great day we capped it off by going over to Squatter’s for a well-deserved late lunch.
dsc001901dsc001991On Monday I got a chance to ride with a good friend of mine from NC, Matt “Skinny” Bagwell.  He and I were freshman together back at UNCG.  While I stayed in academia Matty became a tattoo artist which brought him here for the Salt Lake Tattoo convention.  If you are into ink and ever down in Charlotte NC make sure and stop by Ace Custom Tattoo and talk with Matty, he is one badass artist.  Just look at eh new piece he did on Flavia. dsc001482 He and his friend Stephanie stayed at our place then we all got to ride yesterday.  I threw on an extra layer because of the weather on Sunday and I am glad I did.  It was windy and snowing up there the whole day.  It was Stephanie’s first day on a board and she rocked it with some help from Matty.  After lunch (Buffalo chili at Summit house is the best) Matty came out and rode with Flavia and I.  A few runs later he was ready to call it quits.  I guess you kind of tired when you haven’t ridden in 2 years and the try to keep up with a couple of people on a Nidecker and a Kessler.  Well that is a basic summary of the last week so now it is time to get back to work.  The forecast for Park City is snow and more snow all week until Thursday and then more snow starting on Saturday or Sunday.  Hope you can make it up there and take a run with me.  We will be back riding Thursday morning then all weekend.

President’s Day Weekend – The Canyons

9990Saturday 2/14

Happy Valentines Day… As some of my cohorts at the resort said, it was “puking” all day long: In other words, lots of fresh snow. I glanced at the Tanker at one point, and thought about riding it, but changed my mind. Rode the softies all day, taking numerous tree runs in the AM, enjoying the new snow. About lunch-time I got booked for a 1-hour private lesson. Chatting with the client he said: “I’m from Hawaii, and come from a long line of watermen, so I’ve been surfing my whole life.” Then he asks me if I know who Eddie Aikau is… Turns out this gentleman was ‘nephew. So, “coming from a long line of watermen” was kind of an understatement. It was fun riding with / teaching someone with such rich surfing history in his family. You get to meet some pretty cool people working in the snowsports industry sometimes.

Sunday 2/15

The “puking” was over on Sunday. No snow, bluebird skies, and great groomers. A great day to be out playing in the snow. Took a few runs in the trees again to take advantage of the fresh snow from Saturday, then changed out of the soft gear, and grabbed the Tanker 192 to take advantage of some of the groomers. Spent an hour teaching after switching gear, and after that there was no more work, so the Tanker got put to work on Doc’s run on the way off of the mountain. The tanker just put’s a smile on my face every time I ride it. I guess it’s kind of the “do everything” board….

Monday 2/16

Another day on the hill. The grooming is great, and the the skies aren’t so blue, with a few clouds hanging around, as there is supposed to be a big storm blowing in. Business levels are down in the Ski / Snowboard school, so It’s time to do some training. Our trainer today as one of our long-time instructors from Australia, which is great, cause he won’t be shoving AASI doctrine down our throats the whole time. I like clinics with the “foreigners” because of that. The trainers who have an international view are more open minded that the guys who are totally indoctrinated in to the AASI way of thinking. No-one had a real strong opinion on what to focus on in the clinic, so some old guy (me) suggested carving.  So, we spent a couple of hours working on carving drills with 20 instructors in softies, who had nothing better to do, with one double black diamond run thrown in at the end of the clinic for good measure. After the clinic, most of us get released for the day, so I jet home to help my daughter with her science project. Snowboarding in the morning, hanging out with the family in the afternoon… All in all, a great day in my book.

SES Wednesday Update

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Hey all,

We Rode at Aspen Highlands today with some reletively good light.  It’s been socked in this week so it was a relief to see patches of blue the grooming at Highlands was stellar and Billy and I were happy as always to make some turns with friends.  I utilized my UPZ conversion kit to ski boots and shot some video.  It’s much easier to shoot follow cam on skis than a board even though I’m a newbie skier.  I made 4 camera runs and then threw the Camera in the bag and went out to work on my skiing skills.  Frank Dietzel from Virus was nice enough to lend me some custom skis out of his camp.  They were long and hooked up nicely in the groom but I’ll have to work out the bugs in the crud.

Wednesday has been the Hardbooter Kegger at the Highlands at ZG grill. We had a great time mingleing with our Carving friends and actually killed a keg of Doggie Style Pale Ale from Flying dog brewery.  Thanks everyone for attending!  We look forward to having another next year.

The evening continued with a brillient meal from Kevin and Terese consisting of part of their Salmon catch from Alaska. There was cream cheese wrapped with Salmon Lox as well as some marinated Salmon on the grill, skins on. Wow!! What a meal!

The United States Deaf Olympic Snowboard Team helped us close the night with some well earned R&R. There was plenty of Foosball and Bill Loftis and I cleaned up in 6 or so games of pool. No really…. we were undefeated.

Peace!!

SES 2009 Tuesday

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

This is a no ride day and most DON’T take advantage, of course. It’s snowboarding!! Fun was had by all I hear. I personally got some work done. Peter and I hung out, went shopping and had lunch at the J-Bar in Downtown Aspen. I’m a fledgling computpeter-and-meer geek and he’s actually full on so sitting with him on my Apple and he gave me some good lessons on keyboard shortcuts.

Have a great Day!!
